The Caledonian Railway 782 Class was a standard shunting locomotive with 4ft 6in coupled wheels designed by John F. McIntosh and introduced in 1896, 138 of the class were built between 1898 and 1913, most locomotives were given next available numbers, but some were renumbered in 1919 and 1922. The locomotives were taken into LMS ownership in 1923 and into BR ownership in 1948.
The 782 class boiler was identical to that used on the 104 class. The 782 Class Locomotives were 30 feet and 10 inches long and had an LMS power classification of 3-F and a tractive effort of 19890 lbs.
